Palaiya Jumma Palli, Keelakarai, Tamil Nadu

There are three claimants for the oldest mosque title in India. One of the three is the Palaiya Jumma Palli located in the coastal town of Keelakarai in Tamil Nadu. According to some records, the mosque was constructed between 628 to 630 AD. This means that the mosque was built during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The mosque was built after Islam started to spread in the kingdom of the Pandyas of Madurai. It stands as a fabulous example of Dravidian Islamic architecture. The mosque went under several bouts of alterations over the years but it still retains those elements of what are the earliest examples of Dravidian Islamic architecture.
